Modifying Dropplets Blog Software

June 5, 2020, 1:21 am

This blog here is using Dropplets, a single file blog script written by johnroper100. It's fantastic for what I need. A single file that contains an entire blog, that saves posts by means of file storage rather than a database. It's fast, simple, bare bones, and amazingly simple.

However, there was one thing I wanted to change about it, and that was the way it served URLs. I personally despise wordpress-style URLs where it contains the year, month, and day. For example, this post would have been https://jay.mx/posts/2020/06/04/Modifying+Dropplets+Blog+Software

Very unsightly. So I decided to go rooting around in the code and changed some things to make it more presentable and simple. For example, the URL to this post is now https://jay.mx/p/modifying-dropplets-blog-software.

You can find the changes made in my fork of the project here.

I suggest if you're looking for a simple blogging platform with no frills, you check out Dropplets. It seems to have been around for a while, and it serves a very broad purpose while still being oh so simple.
